Great Barrier Reef

Why Cairns?

Traditional place name: Gimuy

Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most iconic marine ecosystems and a vital part of Far North Queensland’s identity, culture and economy. The reef supports thousands of local jobs and businesses, yet repeated mass bleaching events — including severe impacts in 2024 — are placing growing pressure on marine life and the communities that depend on it. With further bleaching risks expected as ocean temperatures rise, Cairns’ dive and tourism community has a crucial role to play in sharing what’s happening underwater, strengthening local resilience and building a collective voice for the reef’s future.
